Rocks, Trees and Water in Watercolor
New to Dillman's
www.tsart.org

Learn skills and techniques to successfully paint a landscape which includes rocks, trees and water. We will talk about creating a winning composition from photographs, study different techniques to portray each of the elements, and then put them together into a finished painting. The instructor will demo the techniques that she uses to create award winning waterscapes and will work with each student to ensure that they understand the techniques and when to use them. Our goal will be to complete a finished painting using the techniques during the workshop.

Teri, a recent transplant from Phoenix, Arizona to Gardnerville, Nevada, has been exploring the many facets of watercolors for many years. The distinctive qualities of watercolors intrigue me and keep me experimenting with different ideas. I love the fluidity and transparency of the medium and try to let those elements represent my vision in each painting.

My goal is to not give a photo realistic impression of a subject, but my artistic rendition through the many unique and surprising accidents that can happen when using watercolors. Although I have a tendency to try to control my art, I strive to turn the control over to the medium and still achieve a recognizable image".

Teri has won numerous awards in art shows and is a charter member of the 'Eastern Sierra Professional Artists'. Teri and her husband own 'Artistic Viewpoints Gallery & Studio' in Minden NV. where she teaches watercolor classes.

ELLEN ROLES TWSA
May 24 - 29, 2009 (Four Teaching Days)
Watercolor: Design and Color Choices
New to Dillman's www.ellenroles.com

Ellen RolesWant to get your creative juices flowing? Ellen inspires students to discover their individual inner gifting and respond to it. She will encourage excellence, give students knowledge and experience toward creativity, artful painting, and design guided by choice and personal preference.

Ellen will teach technical competency-that is, the understanding of qualities of various pigments and how to apply paint to paper so that each student will gain the ability to paint what they have always wanted to paint. The elements of size, shape, color, and how to use them to create unity and interesting contrast will be studied.

Ellen's Biography

"My earliest memory of doing art is sketching trees at our S.E. Minnesota farm. My mother bought me some pencils, a sketchbook and the book How to Draw Trees. I signed up for the first class available in high school, and took every class I could in college. But I never saw anyone paint a watercolor.

More than thirty years ago at an Arts and Crafts Show in northern Minnesota, I saw a watercolor demonstration by Gerry Korte. It had a profound effect on me watching him paint sky, trees, rocks, cabin, and reflections so easily with his brush. I knew then I just had to learn to paint with watercolor.

At the beginning of my watercolor experience I have had the wonderful opportunity of receiving instruction from highly qualified instructors. My first class in watercolor was with Soltan Zabo, an international instructor and author. I thought it was normal to have instructors with those credentials, including Ed Whitney, Frank Webb, Robert E. Wood, Tony Van Hasselt, John Gaddis, Nita Engle, Soltan Zabo, and Skip Lawrence.

My teachers emphasized composition and design as well as technique. In addition to workshops, I attended an art group which had weekly critique sessions. We learned that you could paint a tree the way it was, but far better to consider the shape, hue, intensity, value, size, placement, and texture in relation to the rest of the painting. Better to design the painting than let it happen by accident. Now I live near the Mississippi River surrounded by bluffs, valleys and coulees.

I currently teach locally and regionally. It does my heart good to live in this exceptionally beautiful location. The Transparent Watercolor Society (TWSA) is the only national watercolor society requiring that paintings must be watercolor applied in a transparent manner. An artist is invited to Signature Membership after juried acceptance in three annual exhibits of TWSA. I

I am grateful to receive the letters in 2008."

Basic Drawing and Watercolor
New to Dillman's www.suzanne Mcdermott.com

In this workshop, Suzanne will thoroughly cover drawing and watercolor fundamentals that are often neglected. Through a series of progressive exercises interspersed with mini-lectures and demonstrations, we explore tools and mediums, visual concepts, color mixing and technique.

The initial drawing instruction acquaints you with your innate style and serves as natural footing for understanding basic issues in watercolor. While exploring the natural world around us, we develop our conceptual understanding of form and color and our physical ability to represent what we see on paper. Materials are kept to essentials and work is done on a small, portable scale.

Musician, writer, painter and teacher, Suzanne McDermott currently works in the studio she built in Nashville. Between 1993 and 2002, Suzanne recorded five critically acclaimed albums of songs and toured extensively throughout the US and Europe. In the course of her longer performance career, she has shared the stage with the likes of Gore Vidal, Dory Previn, Bert Jansch, Roger McGuinn, Bill Morrissey, John Gorka, Cheryl Wheeler, Livingston Taylor, Tom Paxton, Laurie Lewis, Dar Williams, and Martin Sexton, performing in such venues as Passim, Sini, CB's Gallery, Godfrey Daniels, The Point, Eddie's Attic, The Bluebird, McCabe's and The Freight & Salvage. Suzanne was a finalist in the prestigious troubadour competition at the 25th Telluride Bluegrass Festival. In 1997,

Suzanne developed her intensive and inspiring Basic Drawing and Watercolor Workshop for the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina. She has since taught that workshop throughout New England, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. Suzanne studied fine art, design and art history at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Santa Monica College, and earned a BA in Humanities (Drama, Art and Music) from New College, Sarasota, FL.

Brilliant Color: Paint Vibrant Outdoor Scenes Watercolor or Oil
New to Dillmans www.juliegilbertpollard.com

Julie Gilbert PollardUse Acrylic Underpinnings to create vibrant colors in your landscape paintings. Since you may choose if you liketo use oils rather than watercolor to finish your acrylic-used-as-watercolor beginnings, this class might easily be called oil painting for the watercolorist.

Julie often begins a watercolor and an oil painting in exactly the same way: with dark acrylic accents. The benefits of this method are numerous and enable you to get your painting off the ground very quickly. Its a unique approach to both watercolor and oil that will add considerably to your repertoire of painting techniques!

Phoenix artist, Julie Gilbert Pollard, paints in oil and watercolor in a fluid, painterly manner. Her painting style, while representational, is colored with her own personal concept of reality. The eye may see as a camera sees, but the minds eye sees an altered, imagined image, what it wants and hopes to see. Its that illusive image, uniquely mine, along with a heightened sense of realness that I try to express in my paintings.

This world of ours is often a frightening and mysterious place, but it is filled with scenes and subjects that excite my eye and imagination! The magical allure of the natural world, and my reverence for it, compel me to attempt to capture its essence on canvas or paper. Garden portraits are a specialty of hers, as are her lovingly rendered Arizona landscapes.

Julie is the author of Brilliant Color: Painting Vibrant Outdoor Scenes, North Light Books, 2009. Additional publications include articles in: How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes, International Artist, 2004; Watercolor 92, Fall Issue; The Artists Magazine, September 1987.

She has given instruction in watercolor and oil since 1985. She currently conducts classes and workshops at Scottsdale Artists' School, West Valley Art Museum and Cynthias Art Asylum, as well as occasional remote location workshops. A frequent award winner, Julies oils and watercolors have hung in numerous juried and gallery exhibits. Her work is included in many private and corporate collections and is represented by Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio in Gardnerville, Nevada and in Arizona by Esprit Decor Gallery in Phoenix & Windrush Gallery in Sedona.

Watercolor: You Can Do It
Returning for the 3rd year www.tonycouch.com

Tony CouchThis will be a thorough workshop, with Tony doing a full sheet demonstration painting each morning, plenty of time for you to paint in the afternoon, and a critique at the end of each day of all of the work done that day.

He will unravel much of the mystery surrounding design while he shows you how to make your paintings fresh and crisp and hell make color much simpler for you.

Many students have said they have learned more in one day at his workshop than in four years of art school. The workshop is geared to beginner, intermediate and professional painter, alike. Youll work hard, but Tony will show you how to have fun doing it.

The eight principles of design will be cut down to size for you and each day you will see how they are applied to a painting. You will learn something valuable and practice it on the spot, coming away with increased understanding and several paintings of your own of which you will be proud.

Classes start at 9 each morning. After a brief talk on the days objectives, Tony will do a complete painting, telling you what hes doing, and why - as he does it.

At noon we break for lunch, then YOU paint in the afternoon, while what you have seen and learned that morning is fresh in your mind. Its the fastest way to learn. One afternoon Tony will give a slide/lecture on the principles of design, using his paintings and those of other artists. Hell cover the major value patterns as well as a simple way to effectively use color.

On Wednesday afternoon Tony will get the beginners together to cover basic watercolor, including equipment and how to make the monster behave, create the 3 textures and many other things that no one ever tells you about because they think you already know it.

You may either attend or use this time to paint. About 4pm each day Tony will critique all the work produced that day, including his own. Its a time at which much is learned by everyone.

Tony Couch received a BA degree in art from University of Tampa, and did further work at Pratt Institute in New York, while an artist for Associated Press, and for years freelanced and studied with Edgar A. Whitney, ANA. His book, WATERCOLOR, You Can Do It, was published by Northlight Books in 1987 and to this day remains the publishers all time best selling book on painting.

His books been translated into Chinese and Japanese for those markets. Two other books on technique and design were also published, as well as 10 videos/DVDs on painting. He has written several articles on watercolor for national magazines and his work is included in the instruction books of 11 other painters.

Deep into Basics for Serious Students of Any Level Watercolor
New to Dillman's www.gloriamillerallen.com

Glorias workshop is designed for the serious student who desires a firm grasp of basics. She believes powerful academic practices are fundamental to growth. Her down-to-earth studies promote confidence and better understanding not only of the basic tools we all want at our fingertips: color, values, design, perspective, creative spirit, but also the development of a rich awareness of personal strengths, weaknesses, preferences, emerging-style, and a focus on personal artistic goals.

Her media is watercolor but artists of other medias are welcome because most of the lessons apply to ART in general. Your time will be spent between color, values, design, and finally pulling it all together.

Gloria lived in Idaho for over 30 years, though she spent her childhood in the Midwest. Her first job was in the Litho Art Department of Hallmark Cards headquarters in Kansas City. Gloria was 18 years old, and learned an incredible amount about color and value contrasts in painting.

After marriage, she and her husband moved to Corvallis, OR for his graduate program. After a PhD, they moved their family of five to East Brunswick, New Jersey for about 5 years - then they moved to Idaho.

She has painted all her life, but out west it became more of a passion. From Mid-America and from Coast to Coast Gloria has enjoyed and struggled with paint. In April of 2006 she receive signature membership in the American Watercolor Society (AWS). Not formally trained, but Gloria has had the privilege of taking workshops from some of the great American Watercolorists (most of whom are in the AWS). She had painted thousands of paintings and knew that library books were gentle and knowledgeable teachers. She had always considered her drawing-board her classroom, and loves the image of being a perpetual student. Thousands of paintings become un-purchasable knowledge. She is grateful that her life has allowed her to explore this watercolor world.

Susan Bourdet
September 20 26, 2009 (Five Teaching Days) Inspiration from Nature
 Watercolor New to Dillman's www.susanbourdet.com

Susan is known for combining delicately detailed foregrounds with soft, impressionistic backgrounds to create realistic and dramatic nature paintings. She teachs how to translate inspirations from nature into breathtaking compositions. Her approach to watercolor involves a structured plan of attack that builds confidence and understanding of the medium through step-by-step control

. With daily demos, handouts and projects, she will teach the principles of designing and laying out the painting as well as masking and preparation. She will share the secrets of her famous wet-into-wet wash technique for backgrounds. You will discover the magic of textures and the delights of delicate detail. ARTIST STATEMENT

Raised in a family that loved the outdoors, I have always sought wild places, feeling that nature is central to my way of life. No piece of my art has ever seemed complete to me without an element that could fly or dart from the page. I moved with my family to Oregon in 1974, where I discovered watercolor. I specialize in this temperamental medium because I enjoy contrasting soft-edged, luminous background areas with delicately detailed birds and animals.

My paintings don't attempt to duplicate what I see in nature, but rather to capture a fragment of the wildness and beauty we could so easily destroy. Susan Bourdet grew up in western Montana, learning early to love nature. Her luminous watercolors combine realistically detailed birds and animals with soft, impressionistic backgrounds, a technique that has evolved through her twenty years of painting. She discovered watercolor at age twelve, being captivated by a local artist's demonstration.

She majored in art and biology, her two great loves, while at Montana State University. After graduation, she struggled to find a way to combine her two interests, working as an artist for a ceramics company and later as a pharmacy technician. For years, she taught watercolor at a local community college in Oregon, where she moved in 1974.

Susan's career as a professional artist didn't really begin until 1980, when she was raising her two children and needed to work at home. Trying to find her place in the art gallery scene, she joined a support group of nature artists and began to show her work in local galleries. In 1989, her paintings were discovered in a Portland gallery by Wild Wings. She now has over sixty limited editions and her work is featured in a yearly songbirds calendar published by Bookmark.

She is the author of Painting the Allure of Nature, published by Northlight Books and is working on a second book for that company. Her newest instructional venture is a video entitled Bold and Beautiful, Backyard Wildlife in Watercolor, produced by Creative Catalyst. Her paintings have been featured in shows and exhibitions all over the country, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's Birds in Art and the Society of Animal Artists' Art and the Animal.

Susan lives with her husband Jim and children Rachael and Dan on several acres of wild woodland, which provide settings and subjects for her artwork. She is an avid gardener, so she combines this interest with her art by planting her yard with favorite flowers and creating a pond and waterfall to attract wildlife. She enjoys sharing her unique methods and insights with other artists and nature lovers in watercolor workshops and seminars.

Diane Maxey, a native Texan now residing in Scottsdale, Arizona, has a degree in Art and Education from the University of North Texas. After several years of teaching public school and trying to find time for her painting she established her own watercolor studio and began her long career of a watercolor artist and watercolor instructor.

Diane spends most of her time painting watercolor inspired from her gardens, travel in the US and Europe, and teaching watercolor workshops.

Participation in national competitions, exhibitions, invitational shows and exhibiting in galleries occupies much of Dianes activities in her studio. For many years, the majority of her work reflects life around her - pot gardens, patios, red geraniums, blooming cactus, and shadows of hibiscuses, lattice, baskets, and warm Arizona sun. In the past few years, Diane's extensive world travel has greatly expanded the subject matter of her paintings to depict her favorite location either in Arizona or around the world.

Dianes passions include a deep love of God, nature, and working in watercolor, photography, and creating gardens - either on paper or at home. Dianes work may be seen at: Scottsdale Fine Arts , E. Main, Scottsdale, AZ and Sonrise Gallery, Carmel CA. Diane and her husband, Bill, spend time spoiling their two dogs now that the children are busy in their own lives.

Bill and Diane have spent the last few years rebuilding a home in Paradise Valley where Diane uses her love of flowers and gardening to landscape, while Bill is the designer and contractor for the remodeling.

Bill a private pilot and they both enjoy flying to different location to ski, hike, fish, and paint watercolor. In their spare time, they direct and produce their churchs dramatic programs and have been Bible Study directors in their church where Bill is an ordained deacon and Diane works with the Womens Ministries. Jean Pederson
October 5 11, 2009 (Five Teaching Days)
 Faces and Figures in Watermedia
 New to Dillman's www.jeanpederson.com

This course is designed to open the door into exploration of various combinations of water media while dealing with the face and figure. You will be encouraged to take risks beyond the traditions of watercolors in the pursuit of your own personal language. As well as working with traditional watercolor, we will be mixing it up by exploring how everything from watercolor to gouache, gesso, inks, and mark making tools can work together. These techniques can be applied to a variety of styles to create your own unique artistic statement. Emphasis will be placed on personal style.

Jean has been painting for over twenty years, balancing her strong teaching and writing abilities with her continuing aspiration to convey her ideas in visual form. Jean's portrait paintings are based on people who have influenced her in some way. These subjects often reflect different walks of life as well as diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Expressing the human figure in a language that reflects the twenty-first century is perhaps the greatest challenge in figurative work today.

Jean's traditional practice includes referential imagery of people, still life, landscape and non-referential imagery. Layering of various media offers Jean an assortment of possibilities; quality of edge, line and texture all play a role within her imagery. Although well known for her mastery of watercolors, mixed media has become an important vehicle for her creative expression.

Jean has been honored with numerous National and International awards over the years, and has work placed in the Royal Collection in Winsor, England. In 2005, she was the first recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists Early Achievement Award, recognizing her many honors and awards for consistently exceptional painting, and for her international writing to promote art education.

Jean has exhibited her work internationally in London, England, Stockholm, Sweden, New York, United Nations, San Francisco, Mexico and across Canada. Outside Jean's traditional practices, she recently completed an exhibit dealing with the changes that have occurred within the social fabric of Rural Canada. Slated to travel to various public galleries, Farm Fragments is as eclectic as the people who made up the rural society. Jean has included paintings, collage (using the old documents to symbolize all that is left of the family farm), and Polaroid transfers of old and new photographs, and installations using the pieces of the old house to tell this story.

The people who broke the land are the real story, they immigrated, toiled and nurtured the land its community. Any experimentation that you practice will ultimately creep into your traditional practice to keep it fresh.
